IELTS Writing Task 2 for nurses: the 3 patterns that cost you band points
Three common IELTS Task 2 writing habits that make strong nurses lose marks, plus calmer ways to practise.
Nurses are trained to be precise. You assess, prioritize, document, escalate, and explain. Those skills help with IELTS Writing Task 2, but the exam rewards a specific kind of written argument. If you bring only clinical writing habits into the essay, you can lose band points even when your ideas are strong.
IELTS Task 2 is assessed through four broad areas: task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. In plain language, the examiner is asking: did you answer the question, organize the answer clearly, use vocabulary well, and control your sentences?
Here are three patterns that often hold nurses back.
Pattern 1: Writing Around The Question
Many candidates understand the topic but do not answer the exact question. For example, a prompt may ask whether governments or individuals should be responsible for public health. A nurse may write a strong essay about why public health matters, but never make a clear choice about responsibility.
Before you write, underline the instruction words: agree or disagree, discuss both views, advantages and disadvantages, to what extent. Then write a one-sentence answer in simple language. That sentence becomes your position.
Good IELTS writing does not need to sound complicated. It needs to stay relevant.
Pattern 2: Listing Examples Instead Of Building An Argument
Nurses have many examples from practice: patient education, medication adherence, discharge planning, infection control, staffing, family support. The problem is that examples alone do not create an essay.
Each body paragraph should make one point, explain it, and then use an example to support it. If the example appears before the point is clear, the reader has to do the organizing work for you.
Try this paragraph shape:
- Main idea
- Explanation
- Short example
- Link back to the question
This keeps your clinical knowledge useful without letting it take over the essay.
Pattern 3: Chasing Fancy Vocabulary
Some test-takers believe a higher band requires unusual words. That can lead to phrases that sound impressive but are not natural. In nursing terms, it is like choosing the rarest diagnosis before you finish the assessment.
Aim for accurate vocabulary first. Words like access, prevention, risk, responsibility, evidence, training, cost, and safety can carry a strong essay when they are used naturally. A clear sentence with the right word is better than a long sentence with three awkward words.
How Nurses Should Practise
Practise with a timer, but do not only practise full essays. Spend ten minutes writing introductions. Spend fifteen minutes planning body paragraphs. Review one old essay and highlight where you answered the prompt directly.
Most nurses do not need to become different writers. They need to adapt their existing judgment to the IELTS format.
